Anime with a Magic Academy (Top 5)
Ah, magic. The lifeblood of fantasy worlds that never make sense, an effective way to solve everyone’s problems when the plot needs it, and one of my favorite story elements of all time. The concept of magic in anime is so vast that you can probably fill up a whole manga or anime with just the premise of a magical academy – sometimes called a magical school. But huh, magical academy? Well…that’s not something we see every day in anime and manga (that’s a joke, heh). So here is a list of five shows that depict the lives of those studying at magical academies.
1. World Trigger (Magic Training)
What would happen if aliens invaded your city?
The answer is simple: They’d take over.
But when the aliens in question are also cute, superpowered kids, things get a little more complicated. And an anime with a magical academy is born.
That’s exactly what happens in the sci-fi adventure World Trigger, which takes place in an average Japanese city called Mikado City. Four years before the start of the series, warps opened up around the world and creatures called neighbors came out and invaded Mikado City. Humans were powerless against their attack—as a result, many of these creatures took humans back to their world and wreaked havoc on them.
But just as it looked like humanity was done for, a group of young people with strange abilities appeared to fight off these invaders. They call themselves Border Agents, and they use weapons called Triggers to fight against their neighbors’ powerful weapons known as Neighbour Triggers. They’re supported by other Border agents who help them train for battle from afar using virtual reality technology.
Among anime with magic schools and a ranking system, this one really focuses on the levels that can be achieved by Border agents over time. Definitely a watch in my book!
2. The Irregular of Magic Highschool (Magic Academy)
A wonderful story based on a beloved light novel and one of the best anime with a magic school and ranking system! The story follows Tatsuya Shiba, a bodyguard to his sister Miyuki Shiba who is also a candidate to succeed the leadership of the Yotsuba clan, one of the Ten Master Clans that govern Japan’s magicians. They enroll into First High School which segregates its students based on their magical abilities.
Tatsuya is a loner who keeps to himself and doesn’t care much for others. His sister Miyuki is extremely beautiful and intelligent, but she can be quite emotional at times. She believes that Tatsuya has no friends because he doesn’t want them, but in reality he simply doesn’t know how to make friends because he doesn’t understand people very well.
At school, Tatsuya meets two new students named Erika Chiba and Leo Durova who both have strong personalities and seem interested in him romantically or otherwise. The three of them quickly become involved in a number of dangerous situations that put their lives at risk as they discover more about one another’s pasts while trying to survive long enough until graduation day! This anime is full of magical academy goodness.
3. Jujutsu Kaisen (Sorcerer Academy)
One day, the world was overrun by Cursed Energy.
It happened suddenly: one day you’d be walking along the street and a passing car would blow a tire and smash into your house, then your dog would run off with some strangers and never come back, and finally you’d get in your car and find that it had been stolen by people who were now using it as a weapon against your friends.
It didn’t take long for people to realize that this Cursed Energy was everywhere—and that it had been there all along. You see, everyone has it: everyone emanates an energy called Cursed Energy, which arises from negative emotions that naturally flow throughout the body. Normal people cannot control this flow in their bodies—they can only suppress it or make sure it doesn’t leak out too much at any given moment.
But not everyone is normal! There are those who can control their own cursed energy—they can harness its power for good or evil (or both). These are Jujutsu Kaisen practitioners: masters of their own bodies and minds, capable of manipulating the very fabric of reality itself.
This anime with a magical academy in particular is a wonderful watch because of its fun use of ateji for their special move names.
4. The Misfit of Demon King Academy (Academy/School)
The Demon King Anos Voldigoad has led many lives, but he’s finally found a way to escape the mayhem and destruction that follows him wherever he goes. In this new life, he is reborn as a demon king with a unique twist: he’s now attending an academy!
Anos has been reborn into a world where magic users must attend school in order to grow their abilities. There, they can practice their skills at various tasks, such as cooking or fighting. The goal is simple: become the strongest magic user in the land.
With his new identity as “Kazuya,” Anos plans to finish his education as quickly as possible so he can live out the rest of his days in peace and tranquility. But when an evil force threatens the Academy and its inhabitants, Kazuya will have to use all of his strength—both magical and physical—to defend himself and those around him from harm.
And for those of you who like demon king anime in general, you’re in luck!
5. Qualidea Code (Magic School)
What’s the best way to describe Qualidea Code?
It’s like if someone took every single anime trope and then smashed them together into one giant pile of awesome. Then throw an anime with a magical academy on top.
The show takes place in a world where humanity’s memories have been erased. The only thing left is their name and a mysterious power they possess, which they call “Code”. The Code users are tasked with fighting against the Unknowns, mysterious monsters that appear every night at midnight.
There are four main characters: Shirotani Tadaomi (Shiro), Takamiya Nasuno (Nasuno), Yusa Katsuki (Yusa), and Kuroh Yatogami (Kuro). They all have different personalities and Code abilities that come in handy during fights against Unknowns.
